Capture Background Map Image

Capture Background Map Image

Capture a background map area and insert it into the drawing as an OLE object or a raster image from disk.

Overview

Capture Image creates a permanent inserted image from a selected background map area. The capture uses the selected map item, drawing CRS, chosen capture area, insertion method, and output quality.

Select a map first.
The Capture Image button requires a selected background map item from the list. The map does not have to be currently visible, but the selected item provides the service used for capture.

Open the Capture Image Window

  1. Assign CRS to the drawing and switch to model space.
  2. Open Web Maps > Background Maps.
  3. Select a background map item from the list.
  4. Click Capture Image.

The Capture Image window opens and shows the selected service name at the top.

Capture Area

Choose the drawing area that will be captured.

OptionDescription
Current ViewCaptures the current model-space view bounds.
Window SelectionPrompts you to pick a rectangular window in the drawing. Use Select Window or Reselect to define or change the area.
Window selection must be valid.
If Window Selection is selected and no valid window has been picked, SPCAD cannot calculate the tile count or capture the image.

Insertion Method

MethodDescription
As OLE ObjectCaptures the map and queues it for insertion as an OLE object. SPCAD reports the generated image path in the command line.
Raster on DiskSaves the captured image to a selected file path and inserts it as a CAD raster image referencing that path.

If Raster on Disk is selected, specify an output image file path before clicking Capture. The Browse button supports common image formats such as PNG, JPG, TIF, and BMP.

Output Quality

Choose the capture quality. Higher quality uses a higher map zoom level and may require more tiles.

QualityZoom Level Used by Capture
Very LowZoom 15
LowZoom 16
MediumZoom 17
HighZoom 18
Very HighZoom 19

The default capture quality is Medium.

Tile Count and Limits

The Capture Image window calculates the required tile count for the selected area and quality. The capture button is enabled only when the required tile count is available and within the current license limit.

If the selected area exceeds the tile limit, choose a lower quality, zoom in, or select a smaller window.

Use Highest Quality Within Limit
Click Use Highest Quality Within Limit to let SPCAD choose the highest quality level that fits the current tile limit for the selected area.

Additional Capture Options

OptionDescription
Bring inserted image to frontMoves the captured image above drawing entities after insertion.
AttributionSPCAD includes attribution information according to the map profile settings.

Capture the Image

  1. Choose the capture area.
  2. Choose the insertion method.
  3. Select the output quality.
  4. Confirm that the tile count is within the limit.
  5. Click Capture.

SPCAD downloads and processes the required tiles, creates the output image, inserts it in the drawing, and reports the result.
