Overview
The DEM Tools in SPCAD group provides a specialized set of commands for processing and analyzing Digital Elevation Models (DEM) directly within SPCAD. Use these tools to fetch global elevation data, reproject spatial coordinates, generate vector contours from rasters, map hydrological networks, and perform advanced pathfinding analysis, all without leaving your CAD environment.
What you can do with DEM Tools in SPCAD
- Direct Elevation Access: Fetch high-quality global elevation data using the OpenTopography API.
- Coordinate Precision: Assign and manage coordinate systems within your DWG to ensure absolute spatial accuracy.
- Raster to Vector Conversion: Transform .tif elevation files into usable CAD contour lines.
- Hydrological Modeling: Automatically map drainage paths and identify watershed outlets.
- Site Planning Optimization: Use advanced pathfinding to determine the most efficient routes across a terrain.
Tools in this group
- Download DEM
Connects to the OpenTopography API to download high-resolution elevation data for your specific project area. This eliminates the need for external GIS software to acquire base terrain data. - Reproject DEM
Efficiently changes the coordinate system of a DEM file. Use this to ensure your elevation data aligns perfectly with your project’s local or global coordinate requirements. - Contours from DEM
Processes raster .tif files to generate vector contour lines. This is a critical step for converting raw elevation data into manageable CAD geometry for grading and site design. - Watershed Network
Performs automated hydrological analysis to map drainage paths and watershed boundaries. Use this to identify natural water flow, drainage outlets, and potential flood zones using defined hydrology parameters. - Least Cost Path
Calculates the most efficient route between two points based on terrain slope and distance. This is a powerful tool for planning access roads, pipelines, or corridors with minimal environmental or construction impact.
Typical workflow
- Coordinate System Setup: Assign a coordinate system to your DWG to ensure all fetched data is spatially correct.
- Download DEM: Fetch the required elevation data for your project boundary via OpenTopography.
- Reproject DEM: If necessary, align the downloaded raster to your specific project coordinates.
- Choose your analysis:
- Contours from DEM for traditional topographic mapping.
- Watershed Network for drainage and environmental planning.
- Least Cost Path for optimized route and corridor planning.
Notes and tips
- Ensure your DWG has a defined coordinate system before downloading data to prevent alignment issues.
- When generating contours, adjusting the interval resolution can help balance drawing performance with the required level of detail.
- Use Watershed Network analysis early in the site planning phase to identify natural drainage constraints before starting heavy grading.
