Import/Export

Overview

The Import/Export section provides powerful tools to exchange TIN surface data with various external formats used in surveying, GIS, civil engineering, and CAD workflows. These tools allow seamless transition between different platforms by exporting surfaces into industry-standard formats or importing external terrain models into your current project.

Whether you’re preparing data for reporting, collaboration, or further analysis, the Import/Export tools ensure interoperability and data portability.

Available Operations

The Import / Export menu includes the following tools:

EXPORT Options:

  1. To Point File (CSV)
Exports the TIN surface’s vertices as a comma-separated values (CSV) file. Useful for sending raw elevation data to spreadsheet software or GIS systems.
  2. To LandXML (XML)
Exports the entire TIN surface as a LandXML file — a widely accepted open standard for civil and surveying data exchange. Includes surface name, triangles, breaklines, and elevation points. Ideal for transferring terrain data to Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Bentley products, etc.
  3. To GeoTIFF DEM (DEM)
Converts the TIN surface into a raster-based Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in GeoTIFF format. This is beneficial when working with raster-based tools, remote sensing software, or hydrological modeling applications.

IMPORT Options:

  1. From DEM (DEM)
Imports a raster DEM (e.g., GeoTIFF) and converts it into a TIN surface. This enables users to take data from satellite models, lidar-based terrain files, or grid elevation datasets and reconstruct a triangulated surface for further analysis or design.
  2. From LandXML (XML)
Loads a TIN surface directly from a LandXML file. Supports full surface definition, including points and triangle connectivity. Essential for reusing surface data from external projects or survey software.

Key Advantages

  • Interoperability: Exchange terrain data across different formats and software ecosystems.
  • Efficiency: Instantly generate output in the format required by stakeholders or third-party tools.
  • Flexibility: Import DEMs or LandXMLs from various sources and convert them into editable TINs.
  • Control: Choose the level of detail and format that fits your workflow, whether grid-based (DEM) or triangulated (TIN).

Use the Import / Export tools to streamline the flow of TIN data between platforms, ensuring you stay connected with the wider design, survey, and geospatial environments.
