A Cartographer’s Essential Guide
Inserting a legend in your CAD drawing is essential for creating clear and informative maps. A legend acts as a key to the various symbols, colors, and patterns in your drawing, helping viewers easily understand what each element represents. Without a legend, interpreting complex drawings becomes challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with specific design elements. Therefore, including a legend ensures that your drawings are both professional and accessible to everyone who views them. SPCAD makes this process straightforward with its intuitive Legend tool, guiding you step by step to customize and insert a legend effectively.

To add a legend, follow these steps:
1. Access the Tool
Begin by navigating to the dropdown menu under ‘Map Elements’ in the Cartography panel. Select ‘Legend’ from the options. Alternatively, you can type ‘LEGEND_SP’ in the command prompt to directly access the tool. A dialogue box will immediately appear on your screen, initiating the legend creation process.
2. Select Features for the Legend
Once the dialogue box is open, select the features you want to include in the legend. These features could range from point features like hospitals to linear features such as roads, and area features like parks. Proper selection is key to ensuring that the legend accurately reflects the content of your map.
3. Add Descriptions
After selecting the features, the next step is to add descriptions for each one if needed. These descriptions explain what each symbol or color on the map represents, providing clarity and context for anyone viewing the drawing.

4. Arrange the Features
To arrange the features in your preferred order, use the ‘Move Up’ and ‘Move Down’ buttons. This step is important to ensure that the legend is organized logically and is easy to follow.
5. Give Title
Now, type the title for your legend and check the box if you want to show grid lines.
6. Insert the Legend
Finally, click ‘OK’ to complete the process. Then, specify the legend’s extent by drawing a selection window on your map. The legend will be inserted into your drawing, providing an essential guide for interpreting the map’s features.
By including a legend, you significantly enhance the readability and professionalism of your CAD drawings, ensuring that all users can accurately interpret the information presented.
